NAVY DAYS – LA III
Visit of USS Lassen, April 15-18, 2004

by Melis Askew

This past week saw the revival of "Navy Days LA." Too many assets were committed in the Persian Gulf to hold the event last year.

The purpose of this visit was to educate the public about our Navy, to provide a venue to interface with the Navy and its sailors, to support recruiting offices and local sea cadet troops, and to gain support for the Navy League. Most importantly, Navy Days gave all of us an opportunity to say a big “Thank You” to the sailors of this ship for their service to our country with a “Big Welcome to Los Angeles”.

On Thursday, April 15th, about 170 Navy League members and guests, including a group from CBYC, boarded the USS Lassen, a Guided Missile Destroyer, for a trip from San Diego to San Pedro. En-route, we enjoyed demonstrations of the ship’s capabilities with high speed runs, slam decelerations from 30+ knots to a full stop in 1½ ship lengths, and full rudder turns at full speed (again 30+ knots), and weapons simulations. The ship’s personnel provided guided tours of the bridge, engine room, combat room, systems monitoring room (or as the sailors said “Welcome to the Department of Gas and Electric”), and more. It was wonderful to witness the sailor’s enthusiasm, dedication, depth of knowledge, and pride.

Friday evening saw a reception and dinner at Fort MacArthur. Again, CBYC was represented as members and other Navy League guests hosted about 100 crew members to dinner and drinks. Later in the evening, CBYC invited the sailors to enjoy our hospitality. On Saturday, CBYC opened it's bar to about 40 sailors with drinks and a burger bash. All sailors were compted, thanks to the generosity of the Navy League and CBYC, while members paid for their burgers. This raised $350 that was donated to the ship’s MWR Fund (Morale, Welfare and Recreation). On Sunday, CBYC opened its doors to welcome the sailors to breakfast.

All in all, it was an exciting four days.

If any CBYC members are interested in joining the Navy League, contact Grant Ivey, National Director, Navy League of the United States at (310) 392-1275 or e-mail grantivey@adelphia.net.

Lassen Crew Thanks CYBC

The following letter, dated April 29, 2004, is a "thanks" from the crew of the U.S.S. Lassen for our donation to the ship's Morale, Welfare and Recreation Fund:

Dear Cabrillo Beach Yacht Club,

On behalf of the crew of the U.S.S. Lassen (DDG 82), I want to thank you for the gracious donation you made to our Recreation Services Fund.

We thoroughly enjoyed our time in Los Angeles during the L.A. Navy Days, and your efforts to support the crew with the brunch and magic show were greatly appreciated. We are looking forward to future opportunities to work with you.

As the Recreation Fund Custodian, I will use this donation to fund our upcoming activities this summer. We have several events and divisional parties scheduled in the next few months so your donation will greatly benefit the crew.

Enclosed please find a receipt for the donation. Thank you again for your hospitatlity and generosity.

Sincerely,

D.M. Blood
ENS, USN
